After twenty-two years of lulling his followers with peaceful music, Uganda’s King of Soul music Maurice Kirya has decided to call it a career. Omulembe Gwa Kirya, Headmaster, Busaabala, Wooye, Boda Boda, and Bbuba are just a few of the well-known songs by Maurice Kirya.
“I’ve had a blast singing for you all for 22 years! “ Maurice Kirya said
While at it, the self-described “King of Mwooyo” has encouraged a number of young, up-and-coming musicians to experiment with a kind of music that has not previously received much attention in the local music business. On Wednesday night, Kirya made the announcement that he is leaving the music business through his internet outlets. He said that he plans to go on another path unrelated to music.
Maurice Kirya will embark on a global tour, stopping in places including Paris, New York, London, Rotterdam, Berlin, Dubai, Nairobi, and Kigali before wrapping off his performances in Kampala with a major celebration. Although the exact dates of his global tour have not yet been revealed, the revelation has elicited a range of emotions among his supporters as they process both the lows of his departure and the highs of the remaining gigs.
The 38-year-old has expressed gratitude to everyone who has helped his music career along with those who have inspired and motivated him during his difficult times.
“It’s time to take on a new form, I’ve had a blast singing for you all for 22 years!! Time to hang the gloves! Another journey is calling me. Come 2023 we’ll be wrapping this up in style and with a bang! Thanks to everyone that sang along, inspired me, and supported me! It’s been powerful and I couldn’t have done it without you! ” Maurice Kirya
