On Sunday morning, an accident on the Kampala-Masaka Highway road claimed at least four lives. At 11 am, a saloon Toyota Corolla Fielder with the registration number UBL 270S and a bus with the registration number UAW 561P owned by Global Coaches collided in Kayabwe’s Nabusanke Trading Centre.
Two of the Fielder’s three female adult passengers (including the driver) perished at the scene, while one passed away on the way to Nkozi Hospital. The authorities have not yet determined the identity of the deceased. Everyone who was inside the bus made it out safely. The truck was coming from Masaka while the bus was traveling from Kampala to Mbarara in western Uganda. Eyewitness Ms. Susan Nakitto attributed the collision to the bus driver, who struck the saloon car head-on while attempting on pass other vehicles.
“We were all shocked to see the bus moving from its lane and knocking the car which was coming from a different direction. The driver of the car tried to dodge the oncoming bus, but failed,” she claimed.
The traffic police spokesman, ASP Faridah Nampiima, however, blamed the accident on the Fielder’s driver’s irresponsible overtaking, hitting a hump, and ramming into the bus, which was traveling in the same direction as it was going from Masaka.
ASP Nampiima asked drivers to drive with additional patience during this holiday season because traffic loads are expected to increase on all highways a few days ago.
She wrote, “All enough time for your journey and let us avoid road rage,”
A bus with the registration number UAX 283A toppled at Nabyewanga Village in the Mpigi District on April 15 of this year, resulting in the most recent traffic accident involving a Global bus along the same highway. According to eyewitnesses, the majority of the passengers on bond managed to escape unharmed.
Some panicked people shattered windows to get away. Road safety advocates and passengers have long complained about Global Coaches’ excessive speed, which they claim endangers the lives of other motorists. The Mbarara, Kampala-Masaka road continues to be one of the most accident prone in the nation, with 200 to 300 fatalities recorded yearly.
