Condolences are pouring in for a couple who were killed by a train on Sunday morning at a railway crossing in a Train Accident in Nakawa.
Norbert Tizikara, 32, an Architect with the Uganda Police Construction Unit, and Ann were killed when their vehicle was crushed by a train near the Uganda Revenue Authority headquarters in Nakawa, Kampala.
Ann died on the spot, according to Police Traffic spokesperson ASP Faridah Nampiima, while Tizikara was rushed to Mulago Referral Hospital in critical condition.
Tizikara, the owner of Redion Designs, died later, according to our reporter.
The couple was driving a Mercedes Benz with the license plate UBJ 053N. However, the train driver reportedly hooted and flashed lights in vain in an attempt to warn the Mercedes Benz driver.
Road accidents at Kampala’s railway crossings have increased in recent years.
The Ministry of Works has been pressed to take action to address the situation, but all efforts have been futile.
Though, crossing lights have been shown to reduce nighttime vehicle-train collisions.
The couple was said to be retiring after a night out at a city nightclub. According to Uganda Railways Corporation, the incident occurred at 3:33 a.m.
