Reports from our news desk have brought to light a rather heated incident that unfolded during a recent Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) meeting. The incident involved popular singer Sheebah Karungi, who allegedly expelled veteran singer Mamuli Katumba from the gathering.
Since the inception of the Uganda National Musicians Federation, its members have actively participated in numerous meetings with the aim of streamlining the music industry. However, tensions ran high during the most recent gathering when Mamuli Katumba voiced his grievances against the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS).
According to our reporters, Mamuli Katumba exposed the UPRS for its alleged long-standing exploitation of musicians, siphoning off their hard-earned money. Displeased with Mamuli’s revelations, Sheebah Karungi, the Vice President of UNMF, took it upon herself to harass him and subsequently ordered security to remove him from the meeting.
The situation escalated rapidly as Mamuli felt the pressure building, but it was the intervention of UNMF President Eddy Kenzo that finally diffused the tension. This incident occurs at a time when a faction of musicians has been resistant to embracing the ideologies put forth by the federation. Interestingly, Mamuli Katumba has taken this feud a step further by publicly asserting that Sheebah Karungi should be held accountable in the event of his demise.
In an alarming statement, the veteran singer insisted that if he were to pass away at this moment, Sheebah Karungi must be held responsible for her actions. The clash between Sheebah Karungi and Mamuli Katumba highlights the growing discord within the Uganda National Musicians Federation and raises questions about the ability of the federation to unite artists for the betterment of the industry.
