Following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Lens, Paris Saint-Germain won the Ligue 1 title, with Lionel Messi scoring a memorable goal on his way to lifting his first trophy in France since joining the club on a free transfer.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side won the trophy with four games to spare, reclaiming the title from Lille following their surprise victory in the 2020-21 season.
The trophy was eventually won with ease, despite the fact that their latest Ligue 1 victory was met with boos and jeers from the Parc des Princes crowd following a less-than-convincing performance.
PSG reclaimed the title from Lille by winning 24 of 34 games, with only six draws and four defeats.
With Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar leading the line, the Parisians have the best attack in the division, with 76 goals scored, and they’ve stormed 15 points ahead of second-placed Marseille.
Pochettino’s men also have the division’s second-best defensive record, conceding 31 goals, two more than Nice.
Despite their impending title victory, PSG were treated harshly by their own fans once again.
At halftime, a chorus of boos rang out to express fans’ displeasure with what they had witnessed in the previous 45 minutes.
Tensions between fans and the team have been visible. This came after PSG’s humiliating Champions League exit to Real Madrid in the last 16.
After that elimination, Neymar and Lionel Messi were singled out for criticism from the stands, putting pressure on the South American duo.
PSG’s Ligue 1 victory will do little to relieve the pressure on Pochettino, who failed to deliver any other trophies in 2021-22.
Last August, the Argentine’s team lost the Trophee des Champions final to Lille. And they also exited the French Cup and Champions League early.
