On the morning of August 10th, a tragic event unfolded in Uganda. The Kiteezi landfill collapsed, burying homes, livestock, and, most heartbreakingly, people. By Saturday evening, 12 bodies had been recovered, and rescue operations continued.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni addressed the nation, offering his condolences to the bereaved families. “This is a sad moment for our country,” he said. “No one should have to live in such hazardous conditions.”
Museveni criticized local authorities for allowing settlements near the dangerous landfill. He stressed the need for accountability, questioning why residents were permitted to build homes in such a risky area. “Who allowed people to live near such a potentially hazardous heap?” he asked. The president’s words echoed the frustration of many Ugandans who demand safer living conditions.
The UPDF Special Forces have been deployed to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts at Kiteezi. The president also directed the State House Comptroller to provide financial assistance to the affected families. Each family who lost a loved one will receive UGX 5 million, while those injured will get UGX 1 million.
Museveni made it clear that this aid is separate from any legal compensation that may be due if government negligence is proven. He also highlighted the importance of avoiding dangerous areas like wetlands and riverbanks, which are prone to landslides and floods.
