The attempt at SMACK didn’t die in vain by NUP leader and former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, also known as Bobi Wine. This follows Bro. Deodati’s resignation as headmaster of St. Mary’s Coolege Kisubi. After he suspended Bobi Wine’s son, Solomon Sekayi Kampala Nyanzi Kyagulanyi, in March 2022, Bro Deodati gained notoriety. Solomon was placed on administrative leave after the school warden suspected him of bringing marijuana into the hostel.
Bobi Wine complained to parents at the general meeting of parents that Bro. Deodati was making his son’s life miserable and wanted an explanation for why he was separating him. Before Solomon’s suspension, Bobi Wine, his wife Barbara Itungo, the school’s attorney, the headmaster, and the deputy all attended the SMACK meeting where he was invited.
Solomon argued that he was being set up and denied having any knowledge of the drug. He asserted that the dormitory is equipped with cameras and tasked the institution with providing video. The headmaster, however, was unable to provide any video despite acknowledging that the camera lines had been severed the day before the search. Since they had already sent other pupils home for the same reason, they compromised and decided Solomon should be suspended. He would be setting a double standard by staying.
Since then, Bro. Deodati has come under increasing pressure to resign as NUP supporters have labeled him a pro-government. The board of governors met on Tuesday, December 20, and welcomed the new headteacher. Brother Aganyira Deodati turned over control and walked out of SMACK. Where he was posted is still under investigation.
Supporters of the NUP have explained to their detractors that this is known as the Bobi Wine effect. After he cried to his parents, he demonstrated to them how the government conspired with the head teacher to accuse his kid of drug use. In his speech, Bobi Wine demonstrated his lack of reliability upon SMACK’s Bro Deodati.
