Singing sensations Esther and Ezekiel Mutesasira recently shared their candid experiences, shedding light on the challenges they faced after enrolling in Canadian schools. In December 2020, the dynamic duo, accompanied by their mother, renowned gospel singer Julie Mutesasira, made the life-altering move to Canada.
Their primary goal? To continue their education while nurturing their budding singing careers. Esther, formerly in senior three back in Uganda, and her younger brother, Ezekiel, who had been in primary seven, embarked on a new academic journey.
However, their initial days at Canadian schools weren’t without hurdles. Esther and Ezekiel Mutesasira openly acknowledged grappling with language barriers. Canadian English, spoken at lightning speed, left them struggling to comprehend. Esther even faced the challenge of retaking some exams due to these language difficulties.
Another curveball was the transition from traditional note-taking in books to using laptops. Esther, accustomed to the old-fashioned method, had to adapt to this technological shift.
Ezekiel, on the other hand, encountered an additional obstacle. Canadian schools required students to learn French starting from grade nine and below. Unfortunately, Esther had already surpassed this grade level, finding herself in grade ten, leaving Ezekiel to navigate the challenges of acquiring a new language.
Their journey in Canada certainly began with its share of challenges, but Esther and Ezekiel’s determination and talent have undoubtedly propelled them forward, both academically and in their musical pursuits. As they continue to adapt and grow, their inspiring story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, passion and perseverance can lead to success.
