Feffe Bussi, in a recent interview with Mr. Henrie, revealed a surprising tale about his stolen alias, ‘Gravity,’ which is now synonymous with the renowned Ugandan music star, Gravity Omutujju. Feffe disclosed that the name originally belonged to him during their school days when they were close friends.
Gravity Omutujju has undeniably established himself as a household name in the Ugandan music industry, crafting a powerful music brand that has resonated with audiences over the years. Specializing in Kidandali, he ventured into the realm of rap after his dreams of becoming a professional footballer fell short. Interestingly, it was during this period that he and Feffe Bussi were discovering their shared passion for music.
During their sit-down, Feffe revealed that a friend had bestowed the moniker ‘Gravity’ upon him while they were still in school. However, his shock was palpable when he returned home for the holidays and discovered that his best friend had usurped the alias, already making music under the stolen name.
As Feffe reminisced, he shared that he and Gravity Omutujju attended the same primary school, where they fostered their friendship while playing football. Unfortunately, Gravity’s education came to an abrupt halt in S.4 due to financial constraints.
“I went to school with Gravity Omutujju in primary school. He was my friend, he used to play football. He stopped schooling in S.4 because of the lack of school fees.
When I was in S.5, Gravity Omutujju released a hit song titled ‘Walumbe Zaaya’. I was shocked because he was not a sharp boy back in school. He used not to sing because his focus was on playing football and I had introduced him to music.
He used to go to Old Kampala School rhyming my raps and my brother used to tell me. Gravity was my name in school and he stole it. That’s why he respects me to date. He did not tell me that he had taken my alias.
So one day during the holidays as we were strolling through Nakulabye, a boy called him Gravity. He later told me that the football competition at Old Kampala school was too much and he rechanneled his efforts to music. He eventually asked me to own the name.”
The astonishing twist occurred in S.5 when Gravity Omutujju dropped his hit song, ‘Walumbe Zaaya.’ Feffe was taken aback, as Gravity had never exhibited a particular talent for music during their time together. Feffe had introduced Gravity to the world of music, and his friend had previously shown no inclination towards singing, focusing solely on football. To Feffe’s surprise, Gravity had even started rhyming Feffe’s raps at Old Kampala School, which he discovered through his brother.
Gravity had essentially claimed Feffe’s school alias as his own without informing him. It was only during their leisurely stroll through Nakulabye that a passerby referred to Gravity as ‘Gravity.’ In that moment, Gravity confessed that the fierce competition in football at Old Kampala School compelled him to redirect his energy towards music. Eventually, he asked Feffe Bussi to relinquish ownership of the name, a request Feffe reluctantly granted.
Feffe’s account sheds light on the complex history between these two musicians, demonstrating the enduring respect Gravity Omutujju holds for his former friend. Though the stolen alias caused initial discord, Feffe Bussi’s story reveals the intricate dynamics that can unfold within the music industry, where names and identities hold significant weight.
