Chief Justice Martha K. Koome announced on X, formerly Twitter, that Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti had succumbed to her injuries. Kenyan Magistrate Monica Kivuti was shot by Senior Police Officer Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto at Nairobi’s Makadara Law Courts on Thursday. Kipruto was shot dead by officers after the attack, which also injured three officers who are now stable.
“It is with a heavy heart that I inform the nation that Hon. Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate, Makadara Law Courts, has lost the fight against the extensive injuries sustained during an open gun attack in Court,” said Justice Koome on Saturday. She emphasized the need for sensitivity and compassion during this traumatic time.
The incident happened after Magistrate Kivuti canceled bail for Kipruto’s wife, who was charged with fraud. Kipruto, who managed a police station in Londiani, was in the courtroom for unknown reasons. Reports from Nairobi Hospital confirmed that Kivuti was shot in the chest and leg, leading to her death on Friday night. The Makadara Law Courts will remain closed until Monday, as the judiciary enhances security measures.
The incident has shocked Kenyans, as this level of violence is unprecedented in court. Justice Koome stated that it was clear that Kipruto intended to kill the Kenyan Magistrate Monica Kivuti. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind Kipruto’s actions.
The Law Society of Kenya described the event as part of a troubling trend of increasing threats against judicial officers. They vowed to work with Justice Koome to develop strategies for safeguarding the justice system. Finally, this tragic incident highlights the dangers judicial officers face and underscores the urgent need for improved security in Kenya’s courts.
