In a recent presidential address, the Head of State, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, expressed his disagreement with a Resident District Commissioner’s decision to close night discotheques. Despite security concerns following an attack by the ADF in Kasese, the President emphasized the importance of allowing the youth to enjoy their nightlife without unnecessary restrictions.
During Thursday’s evening address, President Museveni directly addressed the unidentified RDC, urging them not to shut down the vibrant night discotheques. He acknowledged the recent tragedy caused by the ADF attack, which claimed innocent lives.
However, the President firmly believed that closing these establishments was an unnecessary measure, especially considering the strong affinity Ugandans have for partying. Asserting his position, President Museveni stated, “I saw some RDC closing night discos. No, Ugandans like partying. You cannot close the bazukulu. We shall discuss the ADF issue. Let the bazukulu enjoy the nightlife, but tell me what to do when an issue arises.” using a local term of endearment for the youth.
He emphasized the need to find a balance between security concerns and preserving the youth’s right to enjoy their nightlife. President Museveni stressed that discussions regarding the ADF issue were necessary, but he sought alternative solutions to address any arising problems while allowing the “bazukulu” to continue their nighttime activities.
In his address, President Museveni highlighted the importance of understanding Ugandan culture and the role nightlife plays in the lives of young people. While security concerns must be addressed, he argued that closing night discotheques would not solve the issue at hand.
By encouraging dialogue and proposing alternative strategies, the President emphasized his commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the youth while also respecting their freedom to engage in social activities.
