Monolith is a 2023 film directed by Matt Vesely that falls into the thriller genre. The movie centers around a disgraced podcast host who is trying to create a hit show to regain her reputation and five-star ratings. The protagonist, played by Lily Sullivan, sets up a recording studio in her parents’ modernist mansion and becomes engrossed in the world of unsolved mysteries and clickbait tropes.
However, the film trips over the very tropes it intends to satirize, including red herrings and a suffocatingly gloomy tone. The movie’s climax reveals a strain of credulity and fails to live up to the earlier intriguing questions that were raised.

Despite the film’s initial promise of exploring the world of podcasts and unsolved mysteries, it ultimately falls short in delivering a satisfying and original narrative. However, the debut feature from director Matt Vesely showcases his love for science fiction and his sincere view of human relationships.
