Lydia ‘Jazmine’ Nabawanuka, a prominent Ugandan singer, insists she has never been a victim of sexual harassment in the music industry, a claim often made by her fellow artists. She acknowledges the prevalence of such issues but credits her safety to her dedicated team.
“I’ve seen and heard about artists facing sexual exploitation to advance their careers, but I’ve been fortunate,” Lydia said. “My management team ensures I’m always safe, handling everything so I only need to show up at the studio.”
Despite the challenges many face, Lydia Jazmine believes her experience is unique due to the protective measures her team employs. Lydia Jazmine emphasizes that talent and hard work are the keys to success, advising young female artists to avoid exploitation and sexual harassment.
“To all aspiring female artists: don’t let anyone exploit you. True talent and hard work will always shine through. Be patient, and the right opportunities will come your way,” she urged.
Her advice follows a recent series of tweets by Swangz Avenue singer Zafaran, who called out male artists for unprofessional behavior during collaborations. Zafaran stated she would never succumb to such pressures, echoing Lydia’s sentiments on maintaining professional integrity.
Lydia Jazmine’s stance highlights the importance of a supportive team and a strong sense of self-worth in navigating the music industry. By sharing her experiences, she hopes to inspire and protect the next generation of female musicians in Uganda.
