The former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, took center stage at a burial ground in Kidda, Masaka on Wednesday, launching a scathing attack against his key opponent, Lubowa Ssebina Gyaviira. Mpuuga, currently a Commissioner at Parliament, accused Ssebina and his supporters of orchestrating a vulgar character assassination campaign against him.
As the incident unfolded yesterday afternoon, Mpuuga called for an end to the character attacks, emphasizing the need for political sanity. He highlighted that the alleged campaign had tarnished his reputation and demanded a cessation for the sake of a fair political contest.
The three-time Masaka MP aspirant, who was replaced as Leader of Opposition in Parliament in December, faces stiff competition from Ssebina and Alice Nanungi in the upcoming elections. Sources revealed that Mathias Mpuuga arrived at the burial ground with a team of energetic political activists, encountering Ssebina’s supporters donning foundation T-shirts.
A clash erupted between the two groups, with Mpuuga’s team pointing fingers at MPs, including Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu, for not offering sufficient support in the face of the alleged attacks. The situation escalated, revealing rival camps willing to accuse each other, overshadowing the primary purpose of the burial.
In the midst of the chaos, Mpuuga’s assistant, Kayita Sserubiri, reportedly engaged in vulgar language, irrationally abusing opponents. Known as one of Mpuuga’s social media handlers, Sserubiri’s actions added fuel to the already tense atmosphere.
The political impasse in Masaka has left key institutions powerless, struggling to address the escalating tensions in Buganda’s capital.
