Following a vehicle accident that gravely injured 15 other persons along the Kampala-Masaka road, at least two deaths have been verified. Around 4 o’clock in the afternoon yesterday, a Toyota Noah and a Toyota Hiace commuter cab were involved in a collision near the Jalia City one-stop center in the Mpigi District.
Abdul Ssekkuma, the Toyota Hiace’s driver, and Sandra Akurut, a resident of Nansana, Wakiso and Namungoona, Kampala District, respectively, were the two people who perished at the scene. Unidentified driver of a Toyota Noah who suffered severe wounds was sent to Nkozi Hospital and Buwama Health Centre IV for treatment together with other survivors.
Sam Ssekitto, one of the witnesses, claimed that both drivers of the unfortunate cars were speeding at the time of the collision. The majority of the survivors, according to him, were riding in the cab to Rakai District to attend a funeral.
“The drivers of both vehicles-one of the Toyota Hiace who was travelling from Kampala and another in a Toyota Noah who was travelling from Masaka side were speeding. They attempted to overtake other vehicles and in the process they collided head-on,” he claimed.
The collision on Kampala-Masaka Road was confirmed by Mr Juma Maggwa, a representative for the Katonga Regional Traffic Police, who also cautioned drivers against driving recklessly to stop accident(s).
“It is a rainy season and roads tend to be slippery. We are also approaching the festive season where we usually record increased road crashes. Let our people adhere to traffic regulations. A big number of such road crashes is as a result of human errors which can be minimized but most motorists have failed to take heed and we end up losing lives,” the man stated.
According to the 2021 Uganda Police Annual Crime Report, there were 17,443 road accidents in 2021 compared to 12,249 in 2020, a 42 percent increase. 4,616 people survived wrecks with minor injuries, and more than 3,000 people died. According to the report, vehicle accidents cause Uganda to lose 10 persons on average each day.
1.35 million people worldwide die on roads each year, according to the World Health Organization. Every day, accidents involving automobiles, buses, motorbikes, bicycles, lorries, or pedestrians claim the lives of up to 3,700 persons worldwide. These are primarily bicycles, motorcycles, or pedestrians.
